The most prestigious alumnus of Southwest Texas State Teachers College (Texas State University), President Johnson was a history major and social science major. When he wasn't busy with school endeavors, he focused his time in campus politics, the debate team and journalism. Johnson graduated in 1930 with a bachelor of science in history with a permanent teaching certificate before realizing his true passion for politics.
A few of his political achievements include serving as a secretary to U.S. representative Richard Kleberg, winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, and being elected to the U.S. Senate prior to his vice presidential and presidential roles. Johnson is known at Texas State for signing the Higher Education Act of 1965, which provided financial assistance and other resources for students pursuing post-secondary and higher education.
Texas State is the only school in Texas to have graduated a U.S. president and his legacy will live on forever. The student center on campus is named in his honor and there is a statue of him in the quad. Johnson was also the first individual to be awarded the Texas State Distinguished Alumni Award in 1959.
Before passing in 1973, LBJ made various attempts to connect with the campus and it is our honor to repay our fellow Bobcat with appropriate respect.
